Diplomatic community mourns Zainab Momodu, Nigerian envoy to Guinea-Bissau
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the passing of Mrs Zainab Joy Momodu, Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the Nigerian Embassy in Guinea-Bissau.
According to reports, Mrs Momodu died on Monday, 7 July 2025, at the Military Hospital in Bissau following a brief illness.
In an official statement, Ministry spokesperson Mr Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa described the late diplomat as a seasoned, dedicated, and accomplished foreign service officer who served the nation with distinction throughout her career.
A member of the 20th Regular Course of the Foreign Service Academy, Mrs Momodu joined Nigeria’s diplomatic corps in 2010. Over the years, she held several strategic postings, earning a reputation for professionalism, unwavering commitment, and an exceptional sense of duty.
Her demise is regarded as a significant loss not only to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs but also to the wider diplomatic community and the country at large.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extends its heartfelt condolences to her immediate family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time,” the statement read. “We pray for the peaceful repose of her soul and for divine comfort for all who mourn her.”
At the time of her death, Mrs Momodu was serving as Acting Head of Mission in Guinea-Bissau, where she played a crucial role in strengthening diplomatic and bilateral relations between Nigeria and the West African nation.
Colleagues and members of the international diplomatic corps have continued to pay tribute to her enduring legacy and significant contributions to Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.
The outpouring of tributes underscores her dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to advancing Nigeria’s interests on the global stage.
