Deji Adeyanju vows to back Tinubu over Obi if ADC presents Him in 2027

Human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has declared that he would rather vote for President Bola Tinubu than support Peter Obi if the African Democratic Congress (ADC) fields the former Anambra governor as its presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.
Adeyanju made this known on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, where he was asked if his recent criticisms of Obi were aimed at discrediting him. “God forbid that I support APC. If the opposition presents Peter Obi, I will vote for Tinubu,” he stated.
His rift with Obi recently escalated into legal threats after the Labour Party candidate, through his legal team, warned of a defamation suit against the activist over remarks made on social media and in interviews. Adeyanju, however, dismissed the move and expressed readiness to meet him in court.
According to Adeyanju, Obi has promoted a toxic political atmosphere, citing the conduct of some of his supporters online. “We cannot have a man who leads a mob that terrorises people online and cannot tolerate criticism, who calls people all sorts of names. Anybody who cannot support their candidate is seen as an enemy of Nigeria or has been paid to do so. That is not democracy,” he said.
He further argued that Obi lacks the democratic sacrifices made by others in Nigeria’s political struggle. “What sacrifices has he made for democracy? Many of us have put our lives on the line at great personal cost. We must sanitise our polity. We cannot have a country where people who terrorise others online dictate the tone of political discourse,” Adeyanju insisted.
While reflecting on his past political choices, he said he had always voted for credible candidates. “In my opinion, I have never voted for a bad candidate. In 1999, I voted for Olusegun Obasanjo.
In 2011, I voted for Goodluck Jonathan. In 2015, I voted for Jonathan again, against the so-called lovers of democracy who wanted Muhammadu Buhari,” he recalled.
