MultiChoice slashes DStv Decoder price by 50% amid subscriber decline

MultiChoice Nigeria has announced a 50 per cent reduction in the price of its DStv decoder, cutting the cost from ₦20,000 to ₦10,000 in a bid to address declining subscriptions and regain lost customers.
The company disclosed this on Tuesday while unveiling its new “We Got You” campaign designed to ease the financial burden on households and attract more subscribers.
John Ugbe, CEO of MultiChoice Nigeria, explained that the campaign aims to make premium content more accessible and reposition DStv as a platform for daily entertainment across diverse genres, not just sports.
“We want to ensure our customers feel appreciated and have access to the best entertainment every day,” he said.
As part of the initiative, subscribers who pay in full for their current package between June 16 and July 31, 2025, will enjoy a free upgrade to the next package tier.
According to the company, this promotional offer and price slash were introduced in response to the harsh economic situation affecting many Nigerian households.
The move follows a sharp loss of 1.4 million subscribers between March 2023 and March 2025, largely blamed on Nigeria’s economic difficulties and a string of price increases.
MultiChoice had raised the prices of its DStv and GOtv packages three times within one year — in April 2023, November 2023, and most recently in April 2024, with the new rates taking effect from May 1.
Ugbe assured that DStv is committed to offering content for everyone, ranging from drama, movies, and kids’ programming to news, in addition to its popular football broadcasts.
