Myanmar Earthquake death toll hits 3,085 as aid efforts intensify

The death toll from the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar nearly a week ago has climbed to 3,085, with search and rescue teams continuing to recover bodies, the military-led government announced on Thursday.

According to the statement, 4,715 people have been injured, and 341 remain missing.

The earthquake, which had its epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, caused widespread destruction, collapsing thousands of buildings, damaging roads, and destroying bridges across multiple regions.

Local media have reported significantly higher casualty figures, and with telecommunications down in many areas, authorities fear the numbers could rise sharply as more information emerges.

The World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that four hospitals and one health center were completely destroyed, while 32 hospitals and 18 health centers sustained partial damage.

The U.N. warned that access to healthcare in the worst-hit areas remains nearly impossible, with thousands in urgent need of trauma care, surgical intervention, and disease treatment.

In response to the crisis, India has deployed a mobile hospital, while a joint Russian-Belarusian hospital has begun operations in Mandalay to assist survivors.
