The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has congratulated the country’s U-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, on their qualification for the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, describing the achievement as a source of national pride.

The association also urged the young players to maintain their determination and secure the trophy when they face Japan in the final.

In a congratulatory statement, NAWOJ National Chairperson, Hajia Aisha Ibrahim, described the team’s progress to the final as an inspiring achievement that demonstrated courage, discipline, teamwork and the competitive ability of Nigerian female athletes.

Ibrahim commended the players, technical crew and coaching staff for their commitment and resilience throughout the competition.

She also praised the team’s head coach, Hakeem Busari, and his technical crew for their leadership and tactical direction, which she said had guided the Flamingos to the final.

The NAWOJ chairperson said the team had already earned the admiration of Nigerians but urged the players to remain focused as they prepare for the decisive encounter against Japan.

“As you prepare to face Japan in the final, we want you to know that an entire nation is standing firmly behind you. You have made Nigeria proud, and we believe you have what it takes to go all the way.

“Play with confidence, courage, determination and the Nigerian spirit. Give the final your very best, make history and bring the trophy home. The world is watching, and Nigeria is cheering you on,” she said.

Ibrahim noted that the Flamingos’ achievement went beyond football, describing it as an encouragement to young Nigerian girls to pursue their ambitions, overcome barriers and compete at the highest international level.

She called for increased investment in grassroots sports development, particularly women’s football, while urging parents, educational institutions and governments at all levels to create opportunities for young female athletes to develop their talents.

NAWOJ also appealed to Nigerians, corporate organisations, sports enthusiasts and other stakeholders to support the team through encouragement and other necessary assistance ahead of the final.

The association expressed confidence in the Flamingos as they prepare to take on Japan, urging them to give their best and return home with the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy.

The statement was jointly signed by Ibrahim and the association’s National Secretary, Comrade Wasilah Ladan.

“Go, girls! Make history. Bring the cup home!” NAWOJ declared.
