PENGASSAN members protest at Shell office over unresolved CBA issues

Operations were briefly disrupted along Broad Street in Lagos on Tuesday morning as workers of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo) staged a protest over unresolved issues relating to their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

The early-morning demonstration was organised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), the union representing senior staff in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

According to sources within the union, the protest was triggered by lingering disagreements over the implementation of the CBA between the workers and the company. While specific details of the dispute were not immediately disclosed, union insiders said members felt compelled to take action following what they described as stalled negotiations.

Traffic Snarl, Restricted Access

The protest led to noticeable traffic congestion along the busy Broad Street corridor, as commuters slowed down to observe the demonstration.

Protesters were seen assembled around the Shell premises, restricting full access to the building and chanting solidarity songs. Security personnel monitored the situation to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

As of press time, Shell had not issued an official statement regarding the protest, and it remains unclear whether fresh talks are underway to resolve the impasse.

The development underscores ongoing tensions in the oil and gas sector, where labour unions continue to push for strict adherence to collective agreements amid evolving corporate and economic realities.
