PSC appoints Monday Agbonika as New Commissioner of Police for Edo State

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of Monday Agbonika as the new Commissioner of Police for Edo State.
Agbonika, formerly with the Police Mounted Troop, replaces CP Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin.
His appointment follows a posting interview at the PSC, presided over by Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu (retd) and supported by Justice Paul Adamu Galumje (retd) of the Supreme Court and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.
The Commission has tasked Agbonika with tackling the rising crime rate in Edo State, particularly addressing the recent killings. He has been urged to ensure proper handling of arrested suspects, as his approach to law enforcement will be a key measure of his success.
“You have to sit up, work to gain public confidence, engage relevant stakeholders, and ensure proper documentation of incidents and actions taken,” the Commission advised. Agbonika was also cautioned against sidelining critical police departments in favor of tactical units.
In response, Agbonika assured the Commission of his commitment to upholding the law and working in close consultation with the Inspector General of Police for guidance.
