Super Falcons advance to WAFCON Quarter-Finals despite goalless draw against Algeria

Nigeria’s Super Falcons were held to a goalless draw by the Fennecs of Algeria in their final Group B clash at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite the stalemate, Justine Madugu’s side maintained their spot at the top of the group with seven points from three matches, securing a place in the quarter-finals where they will battle Zambia’s Copper Queens on Friday.
The Falcons dominated possession and dictated the pace of the game but found it tough breaking through a disciplined Algerian backline. Ifeoma Onumonu and Jennifer Echegini came close to giving Nigeria the lead in the first half, but their attempts failed to find the back of the net.
In the second half, Nigeria’s attacking threat reduced, with the team unable to create clear-cut chances as Algeria defended doggedly. The result ensured that Algeria, with five points from three games, also progressed to the quarter-finals as runners-up in the group.
Meanwhile, the other Group B fixture between Tunisia and Botswana ended in a 1-1 draw, bringing the group stage to a close.
