Tinubu celebrates Abdulsalami Abubakar at 83, hails his role in Nigeria’s Democracy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has penned a heartfelt tribute in honour of former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), as he marks his 83rd birthday.
In a statement from the State House on Saturday, President Tinubu praised the elder statesman for his decades of dedicated service to Nigeria, both in uniform and in retirement. He commended General Abubakar’s unwavering commitment to peace, stability, and democratic governance, not just in Nigeria but across the African continent.
Tinubu particularly lauded the former leader for overseeing Nigeria’s historic transition to democracy in 1999, describing it as a defining moment in the nation’s history. “His selfless act of handing over power paved the way for Nigeria’s Fourth Republic and strengthened the principle of constitutional democracy,” Tinubu stated.
The President also acknowledged General Abubakar’s ongoing role as Chairman of the National Peace Committee, where he has continued to champion dialogue, defuse political tension, and promote credible elections in the country.
Describing him as a patriot of uncommon integrity, Tinubu noted that General Abubakar remains a voice of moderation and wisdom in today’s Nigeria. “His service inspires generations of Nigerians in public life,” the president remarked.
As the former Head of State celebrates another year, President Tinubu prayed for his continued strength, good health, and divine grace in the years ahead.
