Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has disclosed that his administration is working on generating 1,000 megawatts of electricity from the state’s coal deposits. Speaking at the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) “Meet the Governor Series” in Lagos, Mbah assured that the project would not be a stranded investment, stressing that modern technology would be deployed to minimize environmental impact.

He noted that Enugu’s coal has a low sulphuric content of 0.5, which would help reduce harmful emissions.

The governor also highlighted achievements in security, claiming an 80 percent reduction in crime across the state. He said efforts are underway to boost tourism and attract three million annual visitors to Enugu. Key to this plan is the new Enugu International Conference Centre (ICC), which recently hosted the 2025 Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference with 20,000 participants. A 5-star hotel at the ICC is nearing completion, while four branded hotels are expected to be ready by next year.

NBCC President, Mr. Abimbola Olashore, commended Mbah’s leadership, describing Enugu as a “state on the move.”

Also present was the British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Jonny Baxter, who reaffirmed the UK’s strong trade ties with Nigeria.

He revealed that trade between both countries now stands at £7.9 billion, the highest ever recorded, with the UK contributing about 65 percent of foreign direct investment inflows into Nigeria.

Baxter added that the UK’s “Developing Countries Trading Scheme” will make over 90 percent of Nigeria’s exports to the UK duty-free, while ongoing collaboration with Nigerian standards authorities aims to raise local business standards.
