Gov Peter Mbah dumps PDP, to Join APC October 14
Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, is set to formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, in what is being described as a significant shift in the political landscape of the South-East.
The high-profile defection, scheduled to take place in Enugu, will draw top APC figures, including National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda and Deputy National Chairman (South) Hon. Emma Eneukwu, alongside governors, ministers, and other senior party leaders.
Governor Mbah, who was elected under the PDP in 2023, is expected to join the APC with a host of national and state legislators, members of his cabinet, and political leaders from across Enugu’s 17 local government areas.
Confirming the development in Abuja on Friday, the newly inaugurated Enugu State APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, said the move would mark “a new dawn” in the state’s politics.
“Yes, I can confirm that His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah, will be officially received into the APC on Tuesday, October 14, in Enugu. It’s a major realignment that will reposition the party not only in the state but across the South-East,” Nwoye said.
He added that the event will also witness the mass defection of commissioners, special advisers, local government chairmen, and former PDP stalwarts who have been working closely with the governor.
Earlier in the week, the APC National Working Committee (NWC) dissolved the Enugu State Working Committee (SWC) and inaugurated a seven-member caretaker committee led by Nwoye to oversee party activities and coordinate Mbah’s defection.
During the inauguration in Abuja, National Chairman Prof. Yilwatda reaffirmed the APC’s resolve to strengthen its presence in the South-East, describing the move as “a major step toward political inclusion and regional balance.”
“Governor Mbah’s decision reflects the widening acceptance of the APC in the South-East. Our goal is to build bridges of unity and ensure that every zone feels represented in the national project,” Yilwatda said.
Deputy National Chairman (South) Hon. Emma Eneukwu also welcomed the development, saying Enugu’s inclusion in the APC’s fold would boost the party’s prospects in future elections.
Governor Mbah, who has faced internal disputes within the PDP since taking office, is reportedly seeking a more stable political platform as his administration continues to drive its development agenda in infrastructure renewal, digital economy growth, and youth empowerment.
“This is about governance, not just politics,” a source close to the governor told News Point Nigeria. “Dr. Mbah believes joining the APC will help him deliver more effectively for the people of Enugu.”
