Spain Defeat Falconets 2-0 in 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Opener

Nigeria’s Falconets suffered a disappointing start to their 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign after losing 2-0 to Spain in their Group F opening match on Monday.

The Nigerian team, despite arriving in Poland following an extensive period of preparation, struggled to match Spain’s intensity and attacking quality at the Stadion Sosnowiec.

Spain made their early dominance count in the 13th minute when Marisa García opened the scoring, putting the Falconets on the back foot.

Nigeria tried to respond but struggled to create clear-cut chances against a well-organised Spanish defence, with the European side maintaining its advantage into the break.

The Falconets continued to search for an equaliser in the second half but were unable to find a breakthrough.

Spain eventually doubled their lead in the 73rd minute through Alba Cerrato, effectively putting the game beyond Nigeria.

The result leaves the Falconets with no points from their opening Group F fixture and increases the importance of their remaining matches against China and New Caledonia.

Head coach Moses Aduku had described the encounter with Spain as a “Cup final” ahead of the game, urging his players to approach the contest with maximum commitment.

“We are looking forward to the match against Spain with high expectations. We are ready and set to go. Spain is a good side, no doubt, but we will approach the game like a Cup final because we want to win,” Aduku said before the encounter.

The Falconets will now turn their attention to their second Group F match against China on Wednesday, September 10, as they seek their first points of the tournament and a route back into contention for a place in the knockout stage.

Nigeria have a strong history at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, finishing as runners-up in 2010 and 2014.

Spain are also among the competition’s leading teams, having won the title in 2022 and finished runners-up in 2018.

With the opening defeat behind them, the Falconets will need a much-improved performance against China if they are to keep their hopes of progressing from Group F alive.
