Akume declares open SGF/SSGs Forum, urges stronger Federal–State collaboration
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has called for deeper collaboration between the Federal Government and state governments to strengthen governance and improve service delivery.
Akume made the call on Tuesday in Jos, Plateau State, while declaring open the second quarter meeting of the Forum of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Secretaries to the Governments of States. The gathering is the second since the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking on the theme, “Understanding the Dynamics in the Roles and Functions of Secretaries to the Government of States,” Akume described the offices of the SGF and SSGs as the “engine room of government operations.” He said their responsibilities extend to policy coordination, cabinet affairs, inter-governmental relations, and ensuring institutional continuity.
The SGF urged participants to embrace digital innovation and transparency in governance, noting that citizens’ expectations are rising in a rapidly changing environment. He also charged SSGs to play active roles in security coordination and continuously enhance their leadership skills to meet current challenges.
“This forum is a strategic platform for harmonising implementation strategies. I encourage you to use this opportunity to deepen collaborative frameworks for the good of the nation,” Akume said.
In a goodwill message, Plateau State Governor, Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, emphasised the critical role of the SGF and SSGs as principal advisers to the President and Governors. He observed that official communications, including memos, are directed to Secretaries rather than their deputies, underscoring the weight of their office.
Governor Mutfwang urged the officials to uphold the confidence reposed in them by their principals, while stressing the importance of synergy across all tiers of government. “Nigeria is at a stage where every stakeholder must work together to deliver good governance and align with Federal Government initiatives for the benefit of our people,” he stated.
The meeting is expected to deliberate on practical strategies for strengthening governance structures, aligning federal and state policies, and promoting effective service delivery across the country.
