Flying Eagles fall 1-0 to Norway in U-20 World Cup opener
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles began their campaign at the 24th FIFA U-20 World Cup with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Norway on Monday, despite dominating much of the contest and creating several scoring chances.
The Norwegians struck in the 9th minute through a controversial penalty, a decision that left the Nigerians frustrated. The Flying Eagles mounted sustained pressure after the setback, especially in the second half, but their appeals for two penalties were waved away by the referee.
Nigeria, twice runners-up in the competition, pushed forward with relentless attacking moves, but Norway’s solid defensive setup held firm to deny them a comeback.
The Flying Eagles will now aim to recover when they take on Saudi Arabia in their second group game on Thursday.
