Panic spread on Monday after a two-storey building collapsed in the Mushin area of Lagos State, leaving several people feared trapped under the rubble.

Eyewitnesses said the building, located on Adedeji Street, came down suddenly during the morning hours as residents went about their daily activities. Rescue efforts were immediately launched by neighbours before emergency responders arrived.

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the State Fire and Rescue Service have since arrived at the scene to begin evacuation and search operations.

Authorities say the exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed, but several injured victims have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Preliminary reports suggest that structural weakness and possible poor maintenance may have contributed to the collapse.

Lagos State has witnessed several building collapse incidents in recent years, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of construction regulations.
