How President Tinubu leadership lured me to APC – Gov Diri
Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant realignment in the state’s political landscape.
Diri said his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was made in the best interest of Bayelsans and inspired by President Bola Tinubu’s leadership qualities.
His defection followed his formal resignation from the PDP on October 15, 2025. The event, held at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa, saw Diri received into the APC by the party’s national chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, alongside Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and several APC governors led by Hope Uzodimma of Imo State.
Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima praised Diri for what he described as a courageous decision to embrace progress and national unity.
“Governor Diri, this gathering is a homecoming celebration of conviction,” Shettima said. “You have shown us that Bayelsa has chosen the light of integration over the shadows of isolation. The APC is the party of those who believe progress can only be guaranteed when we stand together. You have made the right decision, and we are proud of you.”
APC national chairman, Prof. Yilwatda, also commended Diri and the people of Bayelsa for their bold political step, describing it as a sign of confidence in the ruling party’s vision for development.
In his response, Diri said his defection stemmed from the internal crisis within the PDP and his admiration for President Tinubu’s leadership style.
He stated, “Nearly six years ago, by your kind choice of Bayelsans and by divine providence, I was elected governor of Bayelsa State under the PDP platform and honoured with a second term. But over time, the unity and common purpose that sustained the party eroded. Despite efforts to restore it, the internal dynamics made renewal impossible.”
“After wide consultations and careful consideration, we have today formally joined the APC. This was a strategic decision made in the best interests of our people and for the accelerated development of the state. We appreciate the APC leadership for the warm reception and pledge to work collaboratively for the party’s growth and success.”
