The Chinese government has cautioned against any form of foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal matters, following recent threats by US President Donald Trump to take military action over alleged persecution of Christians in the country.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, November 4, the spokesperson of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mao Ning, expressed Beijing’s firm support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, stating that Nigeria has the right to chart its own development path.

“China firmly supports the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as it leads its people on the development path suited to its national conditions,” Ning said.

Describing Nigeria as China’s “comprehensive strategic partner,” she noted that Beijing stands solidly with the West African nation amid rising global tensions.

“China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force,” Ning added.

Her comments came days after President Trump redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over what he termed a “Christian genocide” allegedly occurring in the country.
