How to be a good house guest

1. Inform Your Host in Advance
Let your host know ahead of time that you wish to visit and ensure it is convenient for them. Never turn up unannounced, regardless of your relationship or familiarity with their home.

Similarly, do not arrive with an unexpected guest whom your host was neither expecting nor prepared for.

2. Bring a Thoughtful Gift
It is always a kind gesture to bring a small gift for your host, no matter how modest. Choose something you know they will appreciate—it helps to strengthen your bond and makes them feel valued.

Additionally, if you have a specific preference for a drink or a type of snack, such as a particular brand of biscuits, consider bringing some along. This way, you save your host the trouble of catering to your exact tastes.

3. Respect Their Space
Take note of how your host organises their home and ensure you return any items to their original place after using them.

4. Maintain Bathroom Cleanliness
Whether you have a designated guest bathroom or are sharing it with your host, always leave the space as clean as you found it. Do not leave bath foam, hair, or any residue in the bathtub or sink—it is highly unappealing!

5. Bring Your Essentials
Unless your visit is completely unplanned, ensure you pack your items, such as toiletries, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bath sponges, soap, towels, underwear, and loungewear. Not all hosts are comfortable sharing their personal hygiene products (except toilet paper) with guests.

6. Offer to Help with Chores
If your host does not have domestic staff, offer to assist with cooking or other household tasks during your stay—unless they prefer to handle everything themselves. Your willingness to help will be greatly appreciated.

7. Be a Positive Influence
Find ways to contribute positively to your host’s experience. Engage in meaningful conversations that align with their interests. When you add value to people’s lives, they will always welcome your presence and may even invite you to extend your stay.

8. Respect Their Privacy
Any personal information you become aware of during your stay—especially details not known to the public—should remain confidential. Respecting your host’s privacy is crucial.

9. Be Gracious About Meals
Eat whatever your host provides, as long as it does not affect your health. Avoid making negative comments about the food. If the meals do not suit your preferences, discreetly find a decent restaurant nearby and eat privately before returning to your host’s home. Ensuring everyone remains comfortable and happy is key.

10. Stick to the Agreed Duration
No matter how comfortable your host’s home may be, respect the agreed length of your stay. Do not overstay your welcome unless unavoidable circumstances arise.

By following these simple guidelines, you will leave a positive impression and always be welcome in your host’s home.
