Defence Minister highlights air power as key to Nigeria’s security at NAF promotion ceremony
The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd) OFR, has emphasized the critical role of air power in Nigeria’s security operations, describing it as “central to the successes recorded across multiple theatres.”
Speaking at the investiture ceremony for newly promoted Air Commodores and Air Vice Marshals at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Headquarters in Abuja on 11 December 2025, General Musa said the promotions reflect both personal achievement and the nation’s confidence in the officers’ ability to provide strategic leadership at a crucial time for national security.
He noted that promotion to Air Vice Marshal entails expanded responsibilities and requires broader outlook, heightened discipline, and deep commitment to excellence. He described the newly promoted officers as custodians of NAF’s traditions and values, stressing that their leadership will influence operational effectiveness and shape future military leaders.
“Your elevated position requires clear vision, steady judgement, and an enduring sense of purpose,” the Minister said, urging the officers to embrace their roles with dedication and humility.
General Musa also praised the NAF for its contributions in precision engagements, tactical mobility, and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions that have strengthened joint operations. He highlighted the importance of inter-Service cooperation, stating, “Air operations achieve their full potential only when seamlessly integrated with the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Navy, and all national security agencies.”
The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, congratulated the officers, noting that military rank is earned through diligence, competence, and character. He stressed that the ceremony comes at a time of complex security challenges, including terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and threats in information and cyber domains.
Both the Minister and the CAS paid tribute to fallen personnel and recognized the sacrifices of military families. General Musa also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the Armed Forces under the Renewed Hope Agenda through strategic policy direction, capacity building, and institutional oversight.
The ceremony concluded with the Minister urging the officers to lead with humility, clarity of purpose, and total commitment to national security, and he commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his support to the Armed Forces.
