Senator Barinada Mpigi dies at 64
Death has once again struck the Nigerian Senate following the passing of Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly. He was 64.
Until his death, Senator Mpigi served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, where he played a prominent role in legislative oversight and infrastructure-related matters.
During his time in office, the late lawmaker was known for his active participation in plenary debates, particularly on issues concerning national development and environmental governance in the Niger Delta region.
Mpigi was regarded as a close political ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and had recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His death marks the fourth serving senator to pass away in the current 10th Assembly since its inauguration in June 2023, deepening concerns over the growing list of vacancies in the Red Chamber.
Further details regarding the circumstances of his death and burial arrangements are expected to be announced by his family and the National Assembly.
