International Women’s Day: NUJ calls on government to prioritize Women’s inclusion at all levels
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) joins the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women and advocating for greater gender equality across all sectors of society.
In a statement signed by National President of the NUJ Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, the union called on governments at all levels in Nigeria to prioritize inclusive policies that promote the full participation of women in governance, leadership, and decision-making processes. Women constitute a vital part of the nation’s population and development process, yet their representation in political, economic, and social leadership positions remains below expectation.
According to him “ the Union believes that sustainable development and democratic governance cannot be achieved without the active involvement of women. Ensuring equal opportunities for women in education, employment, political participation, and media leadership will strengthen national development and social justice” he said
The NUJ also urges public and private institutions to create safe and supportive environments that enable women journalists and professionals to thrive, free from discrimination, harassment, and inequality.
Furthermore, the Union encourages the media to continue amplifying women’s voices, highlighting their achievements, and advocating policies that advance gender equality across Nigeria.
As we mark this year’s International Women’s Day, the NUJ reaffirms its commitment to promoting gender balance within the media profession and supporting initiatives that empower women and girls across the country.
The Union therefore calls on policymakers, civil society organizations, and development partners to work collectively in ensuring that women are fully included at all levels of governance and national development.
