Why Governor Bago deserves a second term in office
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago is a seasoned politician, former banker, and administrator currently serving as the Executive Governor of Niger State.
Born on 22 February 1974 in Minna, he hails from the Nupe ethnic group with royal lineage ties in Bida and Lapai.
He attended Marafa Primary School, Minna, and later Federal Government College, Jos, before proceeding to Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, where he studied Political Science.
Before entering politics, Bago built a career in the banking sector, working with institutions such as United Bank for Africa (UBA), Standard Trust Bank, FCMB, and Afribank, where he rose to senior management positions.
Legislative Career and National Assembly Experience
Bago transitioned into politics in 2011 when he was elected into the House of Representatives, representing Chanchaga Federal Constituency for three consecutive terms.
During this period, he served on key committees including Appropriation, Banking and Finance, Defence, ICT, and National Planning, earning recognition as one of the most active lawmakers of his generation.
Governorship and Development Agenda
In 2023, he was elected Governor of Niger State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with a development blueprint focused on agriculture, infrastructure renewal, youth empowerment, and economic diversification.
His administration has prioritised large-scale mechanised farming, positioning Niger State as a major agricultural hub in Nigeria.
The government has also invested in rural road construction to improve market access and reduce post-harvest losses, while urban renewal projects are gradually reshaping Minna and other key cities.
Security and Economic Interventions
On insecurity, Bago has adopted a collaborative approach with security agencies, emphasising intelligence sharing and community engagement to curb crime in affected areas.
His administration has also introduced transport relief measures, including plans for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses aimed at easing transportation costs and improving mobility for students and workers.
Why He Deserves a Second Term
Supporters argue that Governor Bago deserves a second term to consolidate and fully implement his long-term development agenda.
Many of his flagship policies, particularly in agriculture and mechanised farming, are capital-intensive projects that require continuity to achieve measurable impact.
They maintain that his agricultural revolution needs time to mature into a fully functional value chain that can create jobs, boost food security, and attract large-scale private investment into Niger State.
In addition, ongoing infrastructure projects, especially rural road expansion and urban renewal schemes, are still in various stages of development and would benefit from policy stability and uninterrupted execution.
Advocates also point to his focus on youth empowerment and economic diversification as early-stage interventions that need sustained leadership to significantly reduce unemployment and strengthen small and medium-scale enterprises.
Furthermore, supporters argue that his blend of banking experience and legislative background positions him uniquely to drive complex economic reforms that require consistency, institutional memory, and long-term planning.
For these reasons, they believe continuity in office would allow his administration to transition from foundational reforms into full-scale economic transformation for Niger State.
