Blocked Drains Worsened Abuja Flash Flood – FG Says
The Federal Ministry of Environment has attributed the severity of the flash flood that hit Blantyre Crescent, Adetokunbo Ademola, Wuse II, Abuja, on Saturday, August 15, 2026, to blocked manholes and underground drainage channels.
The ministry said the accumulation of silt, solid waste and debris in several manholes and drainage inlets restricted the flow of stormwater, causing the drainage system to become overwhelmed during the heavy rainfall.
The findings were contained in a technical report prepared by the Department of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management following an on-the-spot assessment of the area on Monday, August 17.
The inspection was conducted by a technical team led by the department’s Director, Usman Abdullahi Bokani, following a directive from the Minister of Environment.
According to the report, the intense rainfall generated rapid urban runoff, while blocked drainage inlets and restricted underground channels reduced the system’s capacity to convey the water, resulting in increased surface flooding.
“Under intense rainfall, the restricted system is unable to evacuate runoff efficiently, leading to hydraulic surcharge, backflow, and surface inundation,” the report stated.
The ministry also raised concerns over evidence of sewage-contaminated water found at several locations within Abuja City Centre.
It said the contamination could have resulted from cross-connections, drainage surcharge or poor maintenance of drainage and wastewater networks.
The report recommended an integrity assessment of the affected networks to establish the source of the sewage contamination and determine whether damaged or illicit connections were responsible.
Calls for preventive maintenance
The ministry described the Blantyre Crescent flooding as an indication of a broader drainage infrastructure maintenance challenge in the Federal Capital City.
It recommended the immediate clearing and desilting of affected manholes and underground drainage channels, alongside inspections of upstream and downstream sections to identify concealed blockages.
It also called for a comprehensive assessment of underground stormwater infrastructure across Abuja City Centre, particularly in locations with a history of recurrent flooding.
The ministry recommended that critical drainage infrastructure be inspected and desilted before every rainy season, with additional checks during periods of intense rainfall.
It further proposed the creation of a digital register containing information on manholes, underground drainage channels, flood-prone areas and maintenance activities to improve the management of Abuja’s drainage system.
The report also urged the relevant FCT authorities and the Federal Ministry of Environment to establish joint periodic monitoring of drainage infrastructure and maintenance activities.
The ministry warned that emergency clearing exercises alone would not adequately address Abuja’s recurring flooding, stressing the need for preventive and scheduled maintenance.
It consequently sought approval to formally communicate its findings to the relevant FCT environmental and development authorities and request immediate intervention at Blantyre Crescent.
The ministry also called for a comprehensive and verifiable routine maintenance programme for manholes and underground stormwater infrastructure across Abuja City Centre.
The technical assessment team comprised Bokani, who served as team lead, Engr. Attah Abdullahi, Engr. Feyisetan Ayomiposi and Engr. Isa Yahaya.
