Osun Poll: We Hoped for Different Outcome, But Respect INEC’s Position — Oyebamiji
The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the August 15 Osun State election, Bola Oyebamiji, has broken his silence following his defeat by incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Oyebamiji, in a statement issued on Tuesday in Osogbo, said although he had hoped for a different outcome, he respected the position of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He also expressed support for the APC’s decision to review the election result.
> “Although we had hoped for a different outcome in the election, in the meantime, we respect the position of the electoral umpire and I totally support the decision of our party in its ongoing review.”
INEC declared Adeleke, the Accord Party candidate, winner after he secured 511,067 votes, defeating Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, came third with 17,180 votes.
Oyebamiji thanked voters who supported his candidacy, as well as APC leaders, members, volunteers and other supporters who contributed to the campaign.
> “I am deeply grateful to every voter who placed his or her trust in our vision.”
He also praised campaign volunteers for their commitment, saying their contributions would remain memorable to him.
‘Our Values and Causes Remain Alive’
The APC candidate said the conclusion of the election should not mark the end of the principles and ideas promoted during his campaign.
> “The campaign has come to an end and the election is over, but the values and causes we championed are alive.”
He urged his supporters to continue contributing to the development of Osun State and pledged to support efforts aimed at achieving effective and inclusive development.
> “We will continue to work for effective, inclusive and rapid development of our dear Osun.”
Oyebamiji Raises Alarm Over Alleged Attacks
Oyebamiji also raised concerns over what he described as increasing hostility and violence against APC members and supporters following the election.
He alleged that attacks witnessed before the election had taken a new dimension within 24 hours of the poll and called on the state government and security agencies to intervene.
> “The violent attacks on our members witnessed in the build-up to the election have taken another dimension in the last 24 hours.”
He urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to act swiftly to prevent further escalation.
Oyebamiji concluded by thanking voters, party members, leaders and supporters for their commitment and sacrifices throughout the campaign.
> “I remain proud of the campaign we ran and grateful for the confidence you reposed in me.”
The APC has commenced a review of the election result, with the party saying it is examining relevant electoral documents before deciding on its next course of action.
