Media Heavyweights back NUJ @70 as Anniversary Committee begins nationwide tour

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has officially flagged off its nationwide media house tour ahead of its 70th Anniversary celebration slated for June 21, 2025.
On Thursday, May 15, 2025, members of the NUJ@70 Anniversary Planning Committee paid courtesy visits to top media organizations including TVC, Trust Media Group, and Arise Television, seeking partnership and support for the landmark celebration.
Leading the delegation, Dr. Abimbola Oyetunde, Deputy President of the NUJ and Chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee, commended the media houses for their consistent contributions to journalism and nation-building. She emphasized that the forthcoming 70th Anniversary would be the first of its kind in the Union’s history, dedicated to honouring past heroes, supporters, and institutions that have stood with the NUJ through its journey.
Dr. Oyetunde recalled the formation of the NUJ in 1955, reflecting on the sacrifices journalists have made in promoting democracy and good governance, often under difficult and hostile conditions.
“This 70th Anniversary is not just a celebration — it’s a historic milestone for Nigerian journalism, and we need every media house’s support to make it memorable,” she said.
Responding, media executives including Ayodele Ozugbakun of TVC Abuja/Northern Operations, Hamza Idris of Daily Trust, and Adebayo Awosemo of Arise Television pledged robust publicity and coverage for the event. They praised the NUJ’s resilience and contribution to national development, affirming the Union’s significance at 70.
Other members of the NUJ visiting team included veteran journalist Otunba Gbenga Onayiga, Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, and Assistant National Secretary, Comrade Tita Onyebuchi Nze.
The visits featured presentation of advocacy letters, strategic discussions, and group photographs.
The NUJ @70 celebrations will officially hold on June 21, 2025.
