Fire Service warns of fire risks, issues Eid al-Adha safety advisory

As Muslims in Nigeria join others across the world to mark Eid al-Adha, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) has congratulated the faithful while issuing important safety guidelines to ensure a hazard-free celebration.
In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, the Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Engr. Abdulganiyu Jaji, reminded Nigerians—especially women, who are often in charge of festive meals—to avoid overfilling pans with oil while frying Sallah meat to prevent kitchen fires.
“Cooking is at the heart of our Sallah celebrations, but it is also where most accidental home fires begin. During festivals like Eid al-Adha, the risks increase as families prepare larger meals at different hours of the day,” the CG said.
While extending warm Sallah greetings to Muslims nationwide, Jaji emphasized the need for homes to be equipped with essential safety items such as fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and smoke detectors. He urged everyone to turn off stoves and electrical appliances before leaving home.
The fire service boss also advised that the traditional roasting of animals should be done in open spaces, while gas cylinders must be stored outside the kitchen at all times. He warned parents to keep children away from open flames, matches, and cooking areas during the celebrations.
Beyond domestic fire safety, the Controller-General cautioned against road and water travel risks associated with the festive period. He appealed to tanker and trailer drivers to obey traffic regulations and maintain safe driving speeds to avoid preventable accidents.
For those traveling by water, Jaji advised boat operators to be mindful of water currents and avoid overloading, noting that such negligence often leads to fatal incidents during holiday seasons.
“We are ready to respond at any time, but what we truly want is for Nigerians to stay safe and avoid emergencies altogether. This celebration is about peace, unity, and gratitude. Let’s keep it that way—free of fire incidents and full of joy,” Jaji added.
He assured that the Fire Service would remain fully operational throughout the holiday, with officers on standby and rapid response measures in place. Nigerians were urged to promptly report any fire outbreaks or emergencies to the nearest fire station or through official emergency hotlines.
