Ezuruike claims Silver to hand Nigeria first Commonwealth Games medal
Nigeria has opened its medal account at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with Roland Ezuruike winning a silver medal in the men’s Lightweight Group A Para Powerlifting event.
The experienced para powerlifter delivered an impressive performance throughout the competition, finishing second to secure Team Nigeria’s first podium finish of the Games.
Ezuruike made successful opening lifts and remained in contention for the gold medal before attempting to set a new Commonwealth Games record with a 190kg lift.
However, he was unable to complete the final lift, narrowly missing out on the top prize.
Despite the setback, the Nigerian finished with 153.9 points from two successful lifts, earning the silver medal.
The achievement gives Team Nigeria an early boost as its athletes continue their quest for medals across various events at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Ezuruike’s podium finish marks Nigeria’s first medal of the competition and raises hopes for more success as the Games progress.
