BREAKING: Spain beat 10-man Argentina in extra time to win 2026 FIFA World Cup
Spain were crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in a tense final, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal to hand La Roja their second world title.
The European champions dominated much of the contest but were repeatedly denied by Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who produced a series of outstanding saves to keep the defending champions in the game.
Argentina’s hopes suffered a major blow in stoppage time when Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí.
Spain finally broke the deadlock in the 106th minute when Ferran Torres latched onto Nico Williams’ header and fired a powerful close-range finish beyond Martínez.
Lamine Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal had earlier gone close for Spain, while Williams also had a goal ruled out in extra time following a foul by substitute Mikel Merino on Nicolás Otamendi.
Despite Martínez’s heroic display, Argentina were unable to mount another comeback after recovering from deficits against Egypt and England earlier in the knockout stages.
The final, held in New Jersey, also featured the first-ever FIFA World Cup halftime show, with Madonna and Justin Bieber performing during an extended 27-minute break, while United States President Donald Trump attended the match.
Spain’s victory sees them lift the FIFA World Cup trophy for the second time, ending Argentina’s reign as world champions.
