FG launches Nationwide Campaign for Local Government Proof of Address System

The Federal Government has inaugurated a nationwide sensitisation campaign for the activation and implementation of the Local Government Proof of Address (POA) system, in a move aimed at strengthening governance, enhancing security, and improving service delivery at the grassroots level.

The campaign, launched under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, seeks to provide every Nigerian resident with a verifiable and secure address, thereby serving as a key tool for national development and administrative efficiency.

Speaking at the Northern Geopolitical Stakeholders’ Sensitisation Meeting held in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON, described the POA initiative as a bold step towards resolving long-standing governance and security challenges. Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs Office, Engr. Nadungu Gagare, FNAIE, the SGF highlighted the project’s relevance to the nation’s developmental goals.

“The POA initiative reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s steadfast commitment to tackling the nation’s key challenges while laying the foundation for a safer, more efficient, and prosperous Nigeria. It represents a crucial step towards strengthening governance, enhancing security, and improving efficient service delivery at the grassroots,” he said.

The sensitisation programme was organised in collaboration with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), which is playing a pivotal role in mobilising support at the local level.

In his remarks, the National President of ALGON, Hon. (Engr.) Bello Lawal, represented by his Special Adviser and former Chairman of Karu Local Government Area, Simon Akala, emphasised the need for accurate street naming and numbering linked to a centralised POA database. He explained that such infrastructure is vital for financial inclusion and the delivery of services such as national identity cards, voter cards, international passports, utility bills, and other essential credentials.

He called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, community influencers, civil society groups, and local government officials to rally behind the initiative, describing it as a national cause deserving of collective commitment.

Also delivering a goodwill message, the Postmaster General of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Tola Adeyemi, represented by Mrs. Rose Ismaila, assured stakeholders of the agency’s readiness to support the initiative. She revealed that NIPOST is working closely with ALGON to align street naming datasets with postcodes and to implement a Digital Alpha Numeric Postcode System that would ensure every building in Nigeria can be easily identified.

The sensitisation campaign marks a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s efforts to deepen governance structures at the grassroots level and ensure more effective national planning, safety, and service accessibility for all Nigerians.
