Democracy Day: FG declares Friday public holiday

The Federal Government has declared Friday as a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.

The announcement was made in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the preservation of democratic ideals, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.

He noted that a secure and stable environment remains essential to sustaining democracy and national development, adding that the Ministry, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, will continue to strengthen internal security across the country.

Nigerians were urged to use the occasion as a moment for civic reflection and renewed commitment to lawful conduct and national unity.

He also highlighted June 12 as a significant date in Nigeria’s democratic history, honouring the courage and sacrifices of citizens whose efforts contributed to the entrenchment of democratic rule in the country.

According to him, their legacy continues to shape the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state.
