BYM condemns killing Of 60-year-old woman, after attack at Gwom-Ajang
What should have been a routine day of farm work turned into a tragedy, claiming the life of a woman and leaving another woman injured.
The attack occurred at about 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2026, while the women were engaged in agricultural activities at Gwom-Ajang in Foron District of Barkin Ladi LGA.
Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) condemns the attack on women harvesting soya beans at Gwom-Ajang, Foron District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, which resulted in the death of a 60-year-old woman, Anthonia Sunday, and left another woman, Happiness Gwom, aged 30, injured.
BYM considers this incident deeply disturbing, particularly because the victims were women engaged in lawful agricultural activities to support their families and livelihoods. No citizen should have to risk their life simply to cultivate or harvest crops.
The persistent insecurity affecting rural communities continues to threaten lives, livelihoods, food production and the economic survival of farming families.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, Anthonia Sunday, and wish Happiness Gwom a speedy and full recovery. We stand in solidarity with the affected families and the entire Gwom-Ajang community at this difficult time.
BYM calls on the Plateau State Government, security agencies and relevant authorities to urgently investigate the attack, identify and apprehend those responsible, and ensure that they are brought to justice. We further demand strengthened security patrols and proactive protection for farming communities, particularly during the harvest season, when residents must access their farmlands to sustain their households.
We also urge security agencies to work closely with community leaders and local security structures to establish effective early-warning and rapid-response mechanisms capable of preventing further attacks. The protection of rural communities must go beyond statements of condemnation; it requires visible security presence, timely intelligence gathering and decisive action against perpetrators.
