NUJ FCT mourns veteran journalist Leon Usigbe
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has announced the passing of veteran journalist Dr. Leon Usigbe, who died on Friday, July 25, 2025, after a brief illness.
According to a statement signed by the Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, Dr. Usigbe was first treated at the State House Clinic before being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), where he eventually passed.
A native of Uromi in Edo State, Dr. Usigbe was a widely respected journalist with a long and impactful career spanning several media houses.
He worked with Vanguard Newspaper across Katsina, Kaduna, and Abuja, where he covered the House of Representatives.
He later served as a media aide to former Speaker of the House, Aminu Masari, before returning to Vanguard and subsequently joining the Nigerian Tribune, where he rose to the position of Bureau Chief in Abuja.
Throughout his career, he reported on national politics, including key assignments at the State House and coverage of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Described as a tireless reporter and a stickler for ethical journalism, Dr. Usigbe was deeply committed to truth, accuracy, and amplifying the voices of the voiceless.
His dedication to the journalism profession earned him widespread admiration among his peers and the public.
“His passing comes at a time when the media’s role in promoting peace, development, and accountability is vital. His absence leaves a significant void,” the NUJ FCT said.
The council extended heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues at the Nigerian Tribune, and all who were touched by his professionalism, warmth, and integrity.
