Africa’s Referee representatives for 2026 World Cup announced (Full List)

FIFA has unveiled the list of African referees selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with seven officials earning spots at football’s biggest tournament.

The tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will see the selected referees represent the continent after impressing in competitions organised by the Confederation of African Football.

The officials named include Mustapha Ghorbal (Algeria), Amin Mohamed (Egypt), Pierre Atcho (Gabon), Jalal Jayed (Morocco), Dahane Beida (Mauritania), Tom Abongile (South Africa), and Omar Artan (Somalia).

Notable Omissions Stir Debate

Despite the strong lineup, the announcement has sparked reactions across African football circles following the exclusion of some experienced referees.

Notably absent from the list are Issa Sy and Jean-Jacques Ndala, both of whom have officiated major international fixtures. Daniel Laryea was also omitted, further fueling debate over the selection process.

Spotlight on Selected Officials

Mustapha Ghorbal is widely respected for his calm authority and ability to manage high-pressure matches across the continent.

Amin Mohamed brings vast experience from club competitions, earning recognition for his composure and technical precision.

Pierre Atcho has gained prominence for his consistency and balanced officiating style in both domestic and continental games.

Jalal Jayed is no stranger to major tournaments, having handled several high-stakes encounters.

Meanwhile, Dahane Beida is considered an emerging talent, noted for his strict yet fair approach to officiating.

The remaining officials are also expected to play key roles as Africa seeks strong representation at the global showpiece.
