Alpha jet Pilots avert disaster as NAF launches probe into Kainji in-flight emergency
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed that two Alpha Jet pilots safely ejected after their aircraft developed an in-flight emergency during a post-inspection test flight at the NAF Base Kainji on Saturday, 6 December 2025.
According to a statement issued by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, the emergency occurred shortly after take-off. The pilots, displaying what the statement described as “exceptional bravery and professionalism,” successfully steered the aircraft away from residential areas before ejecting to safety. Both officers are currently undergoing routine medical checks.
The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, commended the crew for their composure and sound judgment, noting that their actions prevented potential casualties on the ground. He has also ordered the immediate setup of a Board of Inquiry to determine the cause of the incident.
The Air Force reassured Nigerians of its strong safety culture and continuous commitment to protecting both its personnel and the civilian population while carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
