Arise News pledges support for NUJ FCT, calls for systematic reform

Arise News has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT chapter, in its efforts to strengthen the union.

This pledge was made by the Deputy Managing Director of Arise News, Mr. Adebayo Awosemo, during a courtesy visit by the NUJ FCT Executive Committee to the station’s office in Abuja on Thursday.

The delegation, led by NUJ FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, was warmly received by Mr. Awosemo, along with other key members of Arise News Management, including Mr. Sumner Shagari Sambo, Director of News, Dr. Chris Isiguzo, immediate past President of NUJ and Director Corporate Services, and Barr. Christian Ita, Director of Guest Liaison.

While expressing gratitude for the NUJ’s kind words about Arise News, Mr. Awosemo voiced concerns over the current state of the union. He noted, “I’ve always believed that every journalist in Nigeria should be a member of the NUJ, but today the union is fragmented. There are different groups out there that have substantially weakened its unity.”
He emphasized that unity within the union would be a powerful force for change, assuring the NUJ of Arise News’ support.

Mr. Shagari Sambo, Director of News, also highlighted Arise News’ commitment to fairness and transparency, citing the credibility challenges that trailed the last election in the council as worrisome.

He pointed out the impact of existing cartels and pledged that Arise News, with its broad network, would continue to collaborate with the NUJ in areas such as training and news coverage to drive positive change.

Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of NUJ FCT, praised Arise News for its global reach and commitment to upholding high standards in journalism. She also reiterated the union’s focus on protecting journalists’ rights and promoting media ethics.

She emphasized the importance of continuous training to help journalists adapt to the digital transformation of the media landscape, and spoke about the potential for a strong partnership with Arise TV in collaborative projects such as investigative journalism and training workshops.

The visit also marked the start of potential joint initiatives aimed at elevating the quality of journalism and creating a more informed public.

Comrade Ike concluded by expressing her appreciation for Arise News’ contributions to the media industry and emphasized the union’s commitment to building a strong partnership for a better, more resilient media sector.

The NUJ FCT delegation included Vice Chairman, Comrade Yahaya Ndambabo, Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, and members of the media team, Ebriku John Friday and Sharoneez Emephia.
