Brazilian VP arrives Nigeria, to Seal 30 major trade agreements
Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin arrived in Nigeria in the early hours of Tuesday for the Second Session of the Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM), a forum expected to unlock significant trade and diplomatic deals between the two countries.
Reports indicate that about 30 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed during the visit.
Alckmin, accompanied by his wife Maria Alckmin, touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, where he was warmly received by Ibrahim Hadejia, Deputy Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, as well as several key ministers including Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mukhtar Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development, and Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security.
According to Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, the visit marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s South-South diplomatic engagements, with expectations of policy breakthroughs in various sectors.
Speaking during the airport reception, Hadejia described the visit as a significant step under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu’s administration, stressing the importance of fostering stronger ties with Brazil. “This dialogue mechanism represents our commitment to leveraging South-South partnerships that deliver tangible benefits to our citizens,” he stated.
He added that Brazil’s strength in agribusiness, energy transition, and industrial development perfectly complements Nigeria’s national priorities.
The three-day summit will conclude with the signing of over 30 MoUs covering defence cooperation, agricultural technology transfer, energy sector collaboration, and cultural exchange initiatives.
