Buratai rejects claims Nigeria is sliding toward failure
Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd), has dismissed suggestions that Nigeria is becoming a failed state, describing such claims as inaccurate and misleading.
In a public statement, Buratai argued that Nigeria has consistently survived major political, economic and security challenges over the years and continues to show resilience. He said the country’s progress is often overlooked by commentators who focus only on its difficulties.
Buratai acknowledged ongoing security and economic problems but maintained they do not amount to state failure. According to him, Nigeria remains Africa’s largest economy with growing opportunities in agriculture, mineral resources, renewable energy, technology and entertainment.
He described the current situation as a period of “renewal,” noting that security agencies and government institutions are making improvements aimed at stabilising the country.
Buratai urged Nigerians and international observers to avoid what he called exaggerated narratives of collapse. He said the country’s unity, human capital and institutional strength continue to drive national progress despite its challenges.
