China pledges support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, warns against foreign interference
China’s ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has pledged continued support for Nigeria’s efforts to tackle terrorism, while warning against outside interference in the country’s internal affairs.
In a post on X on Thursday, Yu said China, which he described as a “comprehensive strategic partner” of Nigeria, backs the Tinubu administration as it pursues development suited to Nigeria’s realities.
“We oppose any country’s interference in other countries’ internal affairs under the pretext of religion and human rights.
We oppose the wanton threat of sanction and use of force,” the ambassador wrote, adding that China is willing to keep helping Nigeria combat terrorism and maintain stability.
Yu’s remarks followed a meeting with Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and come amid growing diplomatic tension after US President Donald Trump asked the Pentagon last week to prepare possible military options over allegations that Christians in Nigeria are being killed.
Trump has publicly warned of potential US action, writing that any attack “will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians.”
The Nigerian government has repeatedly denied claims of targeted killings and suggested diplomatic talks to resolve the matter.
China’s statement signals firm backing for Nigeria on the international stage and rejects the use of religion or human rights as grounds for external pressure or military threats.
The development adds another layer to a widening international debate over how best to support Nigeria in addressing its security challenges while respecting its sovereignty.
