Court dismisses Nnamdi Kanu’s No-Case Submission, orders IPOB Leader to open defence

The Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed the no-case submission filed by Nnamdi Kanu, the detained self-acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in his ongoing terrorism trial.

Delivering ruling on Friday, Justice James Omotosho held that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against Kanu, warranting that he be ordered to open his defence. The judge ruled that the evidence presented by the federal government, alongside the exhibits tendered, raised serious allegations linking Kanu to terrorism activities, which must be addressed.

Justice Omotosho further noted that the evidence and exhibits, coupled with the need for Kanu to demonstrate and lead evidence on his claims of extraordinary rendition, required that he be given the opportunity to defend himself in line with his fundamental right to a fair hearing.

Kanu is currently facing trial on a seven-count charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), bordering on his alleged involvement in terrorism activities.
