Ebonyi Gov’t raises minimum wage to ₦90,000, approves Virology Research Centre
The Ebonyi State Government has announced a new minimum wage of ₦90,000 for all civil and public servants, raising it from the previous ₦70,000.
The increment, which takes immediate effect, was approved during the State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at the New Government House, Abakaliki.
The development was confirmed in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Ikeuwa Collins-Omebeh, and made available to Channels Television on Thursday. He explained that the wage increase is in line with Governor Francis Nwifuru’s ‘People’s Charter of Needs Agenda,’ stressing that the governor is committed to prioritising workers’ welfare.
In addition to the wage review, the council also approved the establishment of the Ebonyi State Virology Research and Innovative Centre. According to Omebeh, the centre will enhance the state’s capacity for research, diagnosis, and surveillance of viral diseases, as well as provide training to meet public health needs while aligning with global scientific developments.
This announcement follows a similar move by the Imo State Government, which on Wednesday raised its minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦104,000 after a meeting between Governor Hope Uzodimma and labour leaders in Owerri.
The adjustments come more than a year after President Bola Tinubu signed the revised minimum wage bill into law in July 2024, increasing the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000 following months of negotiations with labour unions, government authorities, and the private sector. Some states, however, have since moved above the ₦70,000 benchmark to improve workers’ earnings.
