In a move to tackle unemployment and boost self-reliance among residents, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Education Secretariat has launched a one-week free vocational and entrepreneurship training programme during the holiday break.

Organised by the Department of Mass Education in partnership with The Potter’s Wheel Foundation and the Nigerian Non-Governmental Association for Literacy Support Services (NOGALSS), the initiative is aimed at empowering youths, women, children, and other community members with hands-on skills and business knowledge.

A Step Toward Economic Self-Reliance
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Abuja, the FCT Mandate Secretary for Education, Dr Danlami Hayyo, emphasised the importance of entrepreneurship and vocational skills in today’s economy. He said the programme aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Wike-led FCT Administration.

“This is a strategic intervention to promote economic empowerment. It’s no longer enough to rely solely on formal education. Skills acquisition is now key to self-reliance and resilience,” Dr Hayyo stated.

He praised the synergy between government bodies and NGOs, noting that such collaboration is essential in creating sustainable income opportunities for residents.

Skills for Life and Livelihood
Director of the FCT Department of Mass Education, Dr Favour Edem-Nse, said the programme is not just about skills training but about long-term economic transformation.

“This initiative supports the Sustainable Development Goals and contributes to reducing the number of out-of-school children, unemployed women, and unskilled youths in the FCT,” she explained.

Participants will receive practical training in the production of laundry soap, liquid soap, bleach, car wash and toilet wash, disinfectants, air fresheners, and snacks. They will also be trained in entrepreneurship essentials such as bookkeeping, financial management, marketing, branding, and social media management.

Lasting Impact Beyond the Training Week
Dr Edem-Nse expressed gratitude to the FCT Education Secretariat and other partners for supporting what she described as a “life-changing initiative.”

The programme has drawn widespread participation and will run throughout the week, with facilitators offering follow-up support and mentorship to ensure continued progress for attendees beyond the training period.
