FG rolls out Green Project with 11,000 Palm Trees in Awka

In a major step toward sustainable development, over 11,000 palm tree seedlings have been distributed across Awka North and South Federal Constituency in Anambra State to support environmental resilience, economic empowerment, and climate action.
The initiative, announced on September 9, 2025, by federal representative Hon. Emeka Igwe, was executed in partnership with the Federal College of Horticulture and Techsave Nigeria Limited.
Community leaders, including ward chairmen and youth representatives from 19 communities, were involved to ensure transparency and grassroots participation.
The project aligns with Nigeria’s commitments under the Paris Agreement and UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly on climate action, sustainable agriculture, and economic growth. Palm trees are expected to contribute to soil stabilization, carbon capture, and local economic opportunities through palm oil and related products.
This comes as Anambra continues to battle severe erosion, with over 1,000 hectares of land lost in 2024, according to the state government.
The Federal College of Horticulture supplied high-yield Supergene and Tenera palm varieties, while Techsave Nigeria Limited managed logistics and training for farmers.
The initiative mirrors similar efforts by the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW), which is planting millions of date palms across northern states to combat desertification and boost revenue.
Nigeria’s green growth strategy is gaining momentum amid economic challenges, including a ₦149 trillion debt and a low tax-to-GDP ratio. Experts note that palm cultivation could generate up to ₦100,000 per tree annually, strengthening Anambra’s palm oil economy and contributing to national revenue.
Community engagement and accountability are central to the project, with organizers emphasizing sustainability and long-term impact.
The program’s timing follows Nigeria’s renewed commitments at COP29, reinforcing its efforts to tackle climate change and position itself as a leader in sustainable agriculture and environmental management in Africa.
