Gov Otti visits Nnamdi Kanu in Sokoto Prison (Photos)

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, on Sunday paid a visit to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, assuring him that efforts to secure his release were “very much alive and progressing.”

Otti was accompanied by Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu; the Abia State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN); and his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, who later issued an official statement on the visit.

Officials of the Sokoto State Government were also present during the meeting.

According to the statement, the governor encouraged Kanu to stay strong, noting that engagements and negotiations he initiated over two years ago had now been intensified.

“He assured the IPOB leader that the matter would be resolved administratively,” Ekeoma said, expressing optimism that Kanu’s long-running detention would soon come to an end.

Sultan of Sokoto Signals Support

Governor Otti also informed Kanu that the Sultan of Sokoto had shown support for a peaceful resolution of the case. In a lighter exchange, Otti said the Sultan jokingly remarked that Kanu was now his “subject” and would be turbaned — a comment that reportedly drew laughter from the detained IPOB leader.

Kanu, described as calm and in high spirits, thanked the governor for the visit and for consistently showing concern for his wellbeing.

He also commended Otti for the developmental strides recorded in Abia State, urging him to remain focused on good governance. Kanu offered prayers for the governor and members of his entourage before the visit ended.

The visit comes amid mounting calls from political, religious and community leaders for the federal government to embrace a political solution to the prolonged detention of the IPOB leader.
