Gunmen launch deadly attack on Ebonyi community
A group of armed men attacked the Amegu Nkalaha community in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State on Sunday, leaving several people dead and numerous homes set ablaze.
The spokesperson for the Ebonyi State Police Command, Superintendent Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident stating that officers had been deployed to the area.
“The attack did take place, and police operatives are on the ground managing the situation. We are still working to establish the exact number of casualties,” Ukandu said.
Similarly, the Chairperson of Ishielu Local Government, Ifeoma Agwu, confirmed the incident, noting that efforts were ongoing to recover bodies and transport them to the mortuary, making it difficult to ascertain the precise death toll.
“We are currently moving the victims’ remains to the morgue. I cannot provide further details at this time, but more information will be shared later,” Agwu stated.
While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, some residents speculated that it could be linked to the recent killing of cattle belonging to herders in the area. A local source indicated that tensions had been rising following the incident, with community leaders working to prevent any retaliatory violence.
