Health group calls for urgent action as prostate cancer rises among black men
A health advocacy group has raised concerns over the increasing cases of prostate cancer among black men, urging government, healthcare providers, and communities to take urgent steps to address the issue.
The group said studies show black men are more likely to develop aggressive forms of prostate cancer and often face higher mortality rates due to late detection and limited access to healthcare services.
“Prostate cancer is preventable if detected early. Awareness, regular screening, and proper treatment can save lives. Black men must take their health seriously,” the group’s spokesperson said during a press briefing on Wednesday.
The organization recommended that men above 40, especially those with a family history of the disease, undergo routine prostate checks and adopt healthy lifestyles to reduce risks.
Officials also called for government support to make screening programs more accessible and affordable, particularly in underserved communities. They stressed that education and early intervention are key to reducing the growing death rate.
Health experts warned that without immediate action, the number of cases could rise further, putting additional strain on Nigeria’s healthcare system.
The group concluded by urging media campaigns, community health outreaches, and policy changes to tackle prostate cancer proactively among black men.
