INEC, NIMC partner to integrate National ID with Voter Registration
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has teamed up with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to harmonise identity and voter registration systems across Nigeria.
INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, announced the collaboration during a visit by NIMC Director-General Abisola Coker-Odusote and her delegation to INEC headquarters in Abuja. Yakubu said the partnership would strengthen the electoral process, noting that both agencies manage the country’s largest biometric databases—INEC for elections and NIMC for national identity.
In a statement posted on NIMC’s X handle on Wednesday, Coker-Odusote described the move as a strategic step toward national development. She explained that integrating the National Identification Number (NIN) into Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) would ensure every eligible voter is uniquely and verifiably identified.
“NIMC is committed to providing INEC with secure, up-to-date, verifiable identity data for voter verification, while safeguarding data privacy and protection in line with national laws and global best practices,” she said.
The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and aims to make Nigeria’s electoral system more transparent, efficient, and credible.
