Kanu family condemns Court ruling, alleges flaws in trial process
The family of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has rejected the recent court judgment against him, insisting that the decision was marred by what they described as major legal irregularities.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the family criticised the Federal High Court’s ruling, arguing that Kanu was denied the opportunity to adequately defend himself before the verdict was delivered. They alleged that several procedural issues ranging from fair hearing concerns to questions surrounding his extraordinary rendition were ignored during the trial.
According to the family, the judgment failed to address multiple appeals previously filed by Kanu’s legal team, including claims that his arrest and transfer to Nigeria violated international law. They maintained that the court’s stance undermines both constitutional safeguards and judicial integrity.
The family further stated that the ruling could heighten tensions if not reviewed, urging the judiciary to uphold transparency and fairness in matters involving fundamental rights. They also called on the international community and human rights organisations to take interest in Kanu’s case, insisting that the legal process has not met acceptable standards.
They reaffirmed their support for Kanu and expressed hope that the legal team would pursue all available options to challenge the judgment.
Kanu remains at the centre of a long running legal and political battle, with his case drawing national and international attention.
