The Lagos State Government has disclosed plans to investigate the tragic death of Cynthia Oguzie, a 30-year-old woman who was reportedly killed when a water tank collapsed on her apartment in the Lekki area of the state.

The Lagos State Safety Commission’s spokesperson, Adewunmi Okoh, confirmed the development in an interview with PUNCH Metro on Wednesday. According to reports, the incident occurred just two months after Oguzie moved into the residence.

A video obtained by NUJ FCT showed the victim lying motionless on a bed, with a woman in the background insisting she was still alive. Another video displayed the collapsed water tank and the destruction it caused, while accompanying photos showed Oguzie’s lifeless body, believed to be taken in a hospital.

A man identified as Chukwuebuka Nathaniel, who introduced himself as the deceased’s brother via Facebook, blamed the tragedy on poor construction standards. “Beware of Lekki buildings and their water stands,” he warned. “This is how they sent my sister to her early grave. Thank you, so-called Lekki landlord, and your engineer, for doing this type of water stand.”

Responding to the incident, Mrs Okoh stated that the Safety Commission was prepared to launch a full-scale investigation. She urged the victim’s brother to provide the precise address of the building involved to enable proper tracking and accountability.

“We need details of the incident. We will escalate the matter to the Director-General. And the officers in charge will take the matter over. They will investigate the incident,” she assured.

The Lagos State Safety Commission, which is responsible for ensuring public safety in buildings and construction, has previously investigated similar tragic cases and issued sanctions where necessary.

Efforts to reach Nathaniel for further details were unsuccessful, as messages and calls sent to his Facebook account remained unanswered as of the time of filing this report.
