Makinde rules out support for Tinubu’s re-election, says PDP leaders free to choose
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared that he will not support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027, even if the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, chooses to do so.
Makinde made his position clear while reacting to ongoing political realignments and speculations ahead of the 2027 general elections. He stressed that while individuals within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are free to make their personal political choices, his own stance remains firmly with his party.
According to the governor, political loyalty and consistency are critical, adding that his commitment to the PDP and its ideals would not allow him to back a candidate from another party.
“Everyone is entitled to their political decisions,” Makinde said. “If Wike decides to support President Tinubu in 2027, that is his personal choice. But as for me, I will not support Tinubu. I remain a committed member of the PDP.”
Makinde also dismissed suggestions that internal disagreements within the PDP would weaken the party ahead of the next election cycle. He maintained that the party still has the capacity to reorganize, present credible candidates, and compete strongly in 2027.
Political observers say Makinde’s statement underscores the growing divisions within opposition ranks and highlights contrasting approaches among key PDP figures regarding engagement with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, analysts believe such declarations signal the early stages of positioning by major political actors, with alliances and loyalties likely to shape the political landscape in the months ahead.
