The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved President Bola Tinubu’s proposal to renovate and modernize all training institutions of Nigeria’s security agencies.

The decision follows the President’s call for urgent reforms to upgrade and re-equip the training facilities of the Nigeria Police and other sister security agencies nationwide.

Briefing journalists after the 153rd NEC meeting at the State House, Abuja, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani said the council resolved that state governors should work in collaboration with the Federal Government on the overhaul project. He added that NEC has set up a committee to conduct on-the-spot assessments of the institutions.

The committee is chaired by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Other members include Governors Sani, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, and Sule Abdullahi of Nasarawa State. Former Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, will serve as the committee’s secretary.

Governor Sani explained that the project will cover not only institutions owned by the Nigeria Police Force but also those of all sister security agencies.

The NEC meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, also witnessed the swearing-in of Professor Joash Amupitan as the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who joined President Tinubu at the Council Chamber.

The overhaul aims to strengthen training, enhance operational effectiveness, and ensure that security personnel are better equipped to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
